Microgreens have surged in popularity recently.
They add vibrant flavours and pack a serious nutritional punch. These young, edible plants are harvested just after their first true leaves appear. The best part? You can grow them indoors with ease. This guide will teach you how to grow microgreens using the Urban Greens Microgreens Windowsill Kit.
Why Choose to Grow Microgreens?
Microgreens are nutritional powerhouses. They are rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. For example, studies show that broccoli microgreens have up to 40 times more vitamins and minerals than mature vegetables. You can easily include them in salads, smoothies, or sandwiches to enhance the flavor and health benefits.
What makes them even more appealing is their quick harvest time. Most microgreens are ready to eat in just 7 to 14 days depending on the variety you choose. This means you can enjoy fresh greens within a fortnight rather than waiting for months like traditional crops.
What is Organic Coir?
Organic coir is a natural fiber derived from coconut husks. It serves as an excellent growing medium for microgreens because it retains moisture while allowing for good drainage. In fact, coir can absorb 5 to 10 times its weight in water, making it ideal for keeping microgreens hydrated without oversaturating.
Unlike soil, coir is sterile, reducing the chances of pests and diseases associated with soil gardening. It is also eco-friendly since it is a renewable resource. With a neutral pH and lightweight nature, coir is easy to manage, making it a perfect choice for both novice and seasoned gardeners.

Materials You Will Need to Grow Microgreens
The Urban Greens Windowsill Kit contains:
Organic coir: High-quality coir .
Container: A shallow porcelain windowsill planter with drainage holes and a bamboo drip tray.
Water: Use filtered or tap water that has been sitting for at least 24 hours to allow chlorine to dissipate. This ensures healthier plants.
Microgreen seeds: Broccoli, Radish and Rockets seeds.
Light source: A sunny windowsill or a bright position for at least 8-12 hours daily.
Preparing the Coir
Rehydrate Coir: Place the coir in a large bowl. Add 325ml of warm water and leave to rehydrate for several hours or overnight.
Fluff and Drain: Once fully expanded, fluff the coir with your hands to break up any clumps. The coir should feel like a damp spongeâmoist but not soggy.
Planting Your Microgreens
Itâs time to plant those seeds!
Fill the Planter: Spread the hydrated coir in your planter, leaving about 2cm of space at the top. Make sure itâs smooth and even.
Sow the Seeds: Sprinkle the microgreen seeds evenly across the coir surface. Plant densely, but avoid overcrowding. Gently press the seeds down into the coir so they are partly covered.
Watering: Gently mist the seeds using a spray bottle to avoid displacing them. Maintaining moisture is crucial, so check that the coir stays damp without becoming waterlogged.
Germination Phase
Your microgreens will need some extra care during the germination phase.
Cover: Place the bamboo lid on top to cover the seeds. Place the planter where it will not be disturbed and out of direct sunlight. When the seeds start to shoot, remove the lid (inverting it and placing underneath the planter as a drip tray) and move the planter to a bright position out of direct sunlight.
Light: Once germinated, your microgreens need 8 -12 hours of light daily.
Monitor Moisture: Check the coir. Mist with water as needed, being mindful to keep it moist without
letting it dry out.

Harvesting Your Microgreens
After 1-3 weeks, your microgreens should be ready for harvesting!
Look for the Right Size: They are typically ready when they stand about 5cm tall, boasting their first true leaves.
Harvesting Technique: Use scissors or snips to cut the greens just above the coir, leaving the roots intact.
Storing Your Microgreens
Once harvested, it's essential to store these microgreens properly to maintain their freshness and flavor.
The best method is to place them in an airtight glass container. This helps to preserve their crisp texture and vibrant colors while preventing moisture loss and spoilage.
Growing microgreens is an enjoyable, fulfilling and healthy endeavor! With just a handful of materials and a little attention, you can grow fresh, nutrient-dense greens right in your kitchen on a regular basis.
Happy growing!
